Tips For Choosing The Right Size Garden Structure

Consider the size of any garden structure you buy.  It is important for the shed or gazebo to be in proportion with the rest of the yard.  A structure that is too large will become the focus point and detract from attractive plants.  Something that is too small may outlive its usefulness if your family grows.

1Quality of construction ensures that the garden structure will last for a very long time.  If you are building the item yourself, or putting it together from a kit, be sure you understand the directions and are capable of following them.  Make sure you have all the necessary tools to complete the project.

The style of any garden structure should match the style of your home.  If you have a Victorian home, putting a contemporary pergola in the backyard will look out of place.  Home and garden stores and online sites usually offer many options so you can choose the structure that fits with your style.

When you have narrowed down your choices to the perfect shed, trellis or potting bench that matches the style of your landscape and is the appropriate size for your yard, there are still several purchase considerations to take into account.  Most importantly, you need to be aware of needed maintenance and how durable the structure will be in your particular climate.

2Depending on where you live and the weather you experience throughout the year, different structures will be appropriate for your yard.  For example, if you get a lot of rain, you may want to go with a vinyl trellis or one treated with waterproofing rather than using simple wood.  Different materials are rated for different temperature extremes as well.

Any garden structure you purchase will require maintenance.  This may be as simple as an occasional power washing or could be as complicated as yearly painting, waterproofing and cleaning.  Structures such as water gardens and garden kits will require weekly or even daily maintenance.  Be sure of how much work is required and how much you are willing to do before purchasing any garden structure.
